Angela Grey holds no punches.
In a genre often heavy and esoteric, Angela brings a radical simplicity to her storytelling. Raised from Manila to Manhattan, free-spirited and joyful, her soulful voice and warm timbre has been compared to the “Queen of the Blues”, Dinah Washington as well as shades of Amy Winehouse. The Filipino-American songwriter and jazz vocalist first cut her teeth in New York City after stepping foot in the notorious Smalls Jazz Club in the West Village at just 16 years old. She quickly developed a deep love for The Great American Songbook with heavy influences by legendary vocalists like Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin, and Billie Holiday. Angela brings a fresh, radical simplicity to her storytelling—breathing new life into the jazz standards we all know and love. Now based in Paris, France, Angela has become a fixture of the city's jazz scene within her first 3 years of living in the city of light. At just 27 years old, she earned the title of becoming the official vocal jam host at the iconic jazz club, Le Duc Des Lombards, attracting jazz musicians from all over the world. Her debut album, Prisoner of Love, released in April 2024, features two of her original songs and six jazz standards including “Evil Gal Blues”, “You’re Getting to Be a Habit With Me” and the title track, “Prisoner of Love.” Her arrangements are tastefully done with her own personal touch, paying tribute to the musical greats of the past who have shaped who she is today as an artist of her own volition. Recorded in the heart of Paris, at Zoot Studios (Peter Bernstein, Kirk Lightsey, Steve Williams), her quartet is inspired by the Nat King Cole Trio; piano (Simon Chivallon), guitar (Gustave Reichert) and double bass (Luca Fattorini).Prisoner of Love was made with an international team that included mixing by Matt Mysko (ex-Abbey Road Studios) and mastering by Maria Triana (Jazz at Lincoln Center, Metropolitan Opera of NY). Following the release of her album, Grey has toured across Europe including; France, U.K. Germany, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. Her sophomore studio album featuring all original music that blends jazz, blues, folk & soul is currently in the works for a 2026 release date.
